Open Workshop, Newspaper, Typewriter, Printer, Collage
In collaboration with Amon Ritz
As part of Spielstadt Nordbahnhof, A.R.E.A.L Wien
The play city hosted different workplaces; the children were able to earn their own money, which was used to buy goods produced in the city. All the decisions were made in the daily general assembly of all citizens (children). Around 300 children from the age of 7-15 participated every day, with some joining only for a few hours and others for most of the 10 days.
This newspaper, called Nord News, was developed every day in collaboration with the children, resulting in a total of 10 daily issues. The agenda for every day was set during the round table in the morning: discussing events to report on, people to interview, and opinion pieces to write. Experimenting with analog techniques, using collage materials, handwritten notes, stamps, typewriters, and occasionally texts written on a laptop, the layout for the paper was finished every evening, before the Nord News were sold at the city’s Trafik (Kiosk).
