Experiments in Natural Dyes (2025 - ongoing)

Workshop, Textile,  Natural Dyes, Anthotypes

As part of Kinderferienakademie Kunst&Krempel

Experiments in Natural Dyes is both a personal material investigation and an attempt to explore the subject further with a group of children. Starting from the idea of finding alternative forms of capturing embroidery patterns, I combined natural dye processes of silk embroidery threads with antotypes. Printing embroiderd pieces onto paper with traditional dye plants and the sunlight became a gateway to experiment with natural dye methods.

During the children’s holiday project Kunst&Krempel, I invited children to participate in my experiments. Sourcing natural dyes from the surrounding park provided an insight into the colour potential of seemingly inconspicuos plants like the willow trees or elderberry. Combined with more conventional natural dyes like logwood or chochineal, the workshops became a way to learn about colours and traditional processes, as well as a way to engage with the surrounding park. By exhibiting the dyed textile pieces in the park, the experiments also became a way to reflect on the beauty of nature. Kunst& Krempel is a biannual project that invites artists and children to experiment and create new art pieces in different ateliers. The festival takes place every two years during the first two weeks of the summer holidays in Munich. It is free for children to participate and requires no registration.
